My partner and I got caught in a tropical downpour at the Secret Buddha Garden in Ko Samui, Thailand, and had to surrender to the rain.

In meditation and yoga, I understand the word “surrender” in my muscles and in my mind. I understand it as a softening. A letting go and letting be. But I had a mini-epiphany during my practice the other day.

Surrender is also a word we use in warfare. Surrender is a white flag. It’s laying down our weapons. Here in South Africa we’re 100+ days into lockdown and domestic tension is running high for many of us. Yes, we have to surrender to and accept our current situation, but how can we surrender to each other? What would happen if we lowered our boxing gloves?

Perhaps we could soften into each other.
